ABRSM, the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music, has appointed Aileen Douthwaite, the former Deputy Chair of the Heads of Instrumental Teaching Scotland (HITS), as its new Relationships Executive. As part of her newly created role, Aileen will be working closely with Hubs and Music Services across the UK, meeting both managers and teachers to hear their views on how ABRSM currently impacts in their area. The exercise will inform ABRSM’s ongoing strategy as it seeks to effectively engage and support the music education sector, independent teachers and learners. ‘I’m really looking forward to meeting colleagues from all over the UK and to exploring the various challenges the sector now faces,’ said Aileen. ‘I have a great working knowledge of the situation in Scotland having recently left my post as a music service manager there, and am looking forward to learning more about the broader picture.' ‘I arrive at ABRSM at a time when the organisation is clear in its commitment to supporting teachers and to placing them at the centre of its work,’ she added. ‘I now need to get out there and spread that message, whilst also listening to what people have to say about us - the good, the bad and the ugly! I look forward to strengthening established relationships and creating new ones as we develop a teacher support programme that is relevant and of value to all.’

About Aileen

Aileen joined ABRSM in September. A graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and  Drama, now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, she studied French horn with Maurice Temple and Ifor James. As a performer, conductor and teacher she has worked in the formal education sector for over 20 years, latterly managing the Instrumental Music Service for West Dunbartonshire Council in Scotland. During her time in Scotland, Aileen was also an active member of HITS, both on its Executive Committee and as Deputy Chair of the organisation. She was also a member of the Scottish steering group of Music for Youth with whom she continues to be a music mentor.
